In 1891, Reverend Jenkins open an orphanage in Charleston, South Carolina, needing a way to support the children he asked for donated instruments and starting a band. Many of the children, born into the Gullah or Geechee traditions of the islands off South Carolina, enjoyed playing "rag" music using old Civil War band instruments. He worked as a double agent, passing on misleading information to the British which led to the defeat of Cornwallis at the battle of Yorktown. After the war, he fought the Virginia General Assembly to gain his freedom. James took the last name Lafayette in tribute to what the Marquis de Lafayette did to help him become a free man.
